Spread the love

Successful reading and exam success bring about academic success. Academic success is the desire of most students in the world.

Therefore, from my knowledge and experience, below are the tips I think they would help in the quest for successful reading and exam success. These will be very important especially for those preparing for special or professional exams, where many challenges are faced.

1. God’s factor

God is very important in all we do. That is why He said, “cut off from me you can do nothing.” He also said that those who trust in themselves are fools. But those who walk in the wisdom are kept safe. Therefore, when you remember God as you are reading, He gives you more wisdom to understand better. When you pray before reading, you not only understand better, but also have more strength. Prayer also fights laziness and procrastination, and therefore important in your life as a student.

2. Avoid distraction

Keep away all forms of distraction. Distraction I say is in the mind and not physical. One may engage in a lot of activities but still concentrates to read successfully. While one may not engage in any activity, but may have the one’s mind being preoccupied by a lot of things all the time. He/she hardly has time to read or meditate on what has been read.

Distraction can be removed by loving your study more than other things you like.

Example, somebody who likes reading and football, if he likes reading more than football, anytime he is playing football, the person will be playing fast so as to go and read his book. But if he likes football more than reading, anytime he is reading, the person will be reading fast so as to go and play football, and may end up not reading well.

Distraction can also be removed by allowing everything that happens each second to pass and become the past. This will make you to always concentrate in future as you don’t spend time thinking of what has passed; may be former discussion with a friend. Allowing past thing to pass and concentrating in future can make you disconnected from noise and you can even read in noisy area. It can also make your mind and thought to always focus on your books, and you can even be meditating while walking on the road.

3. Read with passion

To me, reading with passion is reading to know coupled with joy which you have because you have known the subject. It is not merely reading to pass exams.

Those that read with passion hardly fail exams on academic reason. They have a lot of information because they read with happiness. And they don’t dodge some statements in the context they read, because they are eager to know. They don’t have fear of forgetting and tend to have long term memory.

4. Try to read with your five senses

It is important to use all our senses to learn. Also know about learning pyramid as represented below.

The learning pyramid above demonstrates that the best method for learning retention is at the base of the pyramid. This means that retention decreases towards the apex of the pyramid. However, in terms of intensive study, the percentage for reading above(10%) can increase much more than the above value. We are advised to practice all the methods to achieve excellence in our academic.

5. Use SQ4R method

S = Survey

Q= Question

R1= Read

R2 = Recite

R3= Repeat

R4= Review

Survey: This is when you fastly check or read through the topic(s) you want to read. This will help you to know the general idea of the topic.

Question: In this you ask yourself the possible questions that may be attributed to that topic.

Read: Now, you read the topic properly.

Recite: Try close the book and discuss the topic by talking to yourself. This will help you to know if you really understand the topic.

Repeat: Repeat the recitation as many times as you want.

Review: Open the book and look at what you have known happily. Your joy is that you have conquered the topic. Then save the topic with one idea in your brain.

6. Divide what you know into smaller units

When you witnessed an event and you are you are asked to tell the story, you will only remember the things that happened one by one and not in stretch.

You can say what happened at last without saying the beginning. You can also say the middle or beginning without the last. So it is in learning. But some people when they are asked to discuss their notes and to start from topic behind or in the middle, they will insist they must start from beginning before they remember the last. That person may not do well in practice; because in practice you are not expected to go into long story before treating a single case you have seen.

Therefore, you are expected to know the subtopics in the main topic you have read even though they belong to the main topic, but as if they are independent and any of them can come in different occasions.

7. Practice method of long term memory

For you to do this you must choose faith over fear. When you are afraid of forgetting you will surely forget a lot. This can disrupt the incoming reading as the person may perpetually live in fear of forgetting. Practice of long term memory is when you read to understand coupled with passion, and also telling yourself that you can never forget what you have read; that it has become part of you. When you have said that you now include that you have read into category of old things you have known.

After you have included it, you tell yourself that when you want to review it, you will review it not only as what you have known but you will make it more balance and long lasting in your brain. So, take all you have known as things you use every day of your life and not as dumped commodities.

8. Practice fast reading and retention

Fast reading is done using SQ4R method. But I have narrowed it into three steps.

First is scanning through the topics you want to read. When you have finished scanning, you are expected to know what the topic is talking about and the subtopics in the main topic you are readings, which can also be called outlines.

Second is reading proper which may not take time if the person has scanned well.

Third is review which helps the topic to balance more in the brain. This is done fastly as you have known the subject after the second step.

How to test for those that read fast is when you give two people new textbooks or notes to read. The person slow may open the book and remain in first page for a long time. But the fast reader will open the book, look at the name. If the books are in chapters, he will survey to know the topics of each chapter. And when he goes to the chapter, the person will scan for subtopics. With this he has known the general idea of the book having known the topics of each chapter. While the other person may still remain in the first page and have not known the general Idea of the book.

For the person that has scanned, he might be motivated to read the last topic or topic in the middle.While the first person might still be afraid of what might be in next chapter.

Note that fast reading I mean is different from reading speed. But it deals with the rates of comprehension.

9. Link what you know

Don’t always think that everything you want to read is new. Linking new idea to old similar or closely related ideas is an excellent way of retention. Research has shown that ideas of the same kind are stored in the same place in the brain.

Therefore when you store idea or knowledge and read closely related topics, trying to store the later in different place will disrupt your brain. So, when you read similar or closely related topics in two books, try to link them and make them one idea.

Other tips of relevance

10) ) Be consistent in reading.

11) Have self discipline.

12) Have a good rest or sleep especially in the afternoon at least one or two hours. It makes your brain more refreshed.

13) Don’t be envious to discuss what you know with your colleagues. If you do, you are cheating yourself.

14) Eat well. Don’t starve yourself because of book. It doesn’t work that way. Our brain needs energy as we read.

15) Get information from your senior colleagues.

16) Minimize or if possible stay away from foods that affect your memory negatively.

17) Be humble. Be yourself, and know what works for you and your limitations.

18) Don’t think you are not intelligent.

19) Attend classes or lectures and try to understand the topics taught there. It makes your reading faster.

20) In exam keep your mind wide while answering a question. Don’t think that answer must come from one area.

21) Manage your time. Answer the questions you know first. Also it helps when you answer the questions that consume less time first.

22) Fight exam tension. It can make your writing dangerous. To contain exam tension, before you enter exam hall, hold yourself and do normal breathing exercise. Take deep breaths and breath out severally until your muscles have relaxed. With that nothing will affect the movement of your hand.

The truth is that no one is perfect. But with God we can achieve all. Learning continuous every day of our lives.

Wishing you success in all your studies and axams, and happiness of life in all you do.
